Project Baton or Project Manager, Which One Are You?
With the increased interest obsessed to "leadership" in today's concern community, one could argue for the child's play substitution of the expression Project State with Project Leadership. Rightly so, on account of in some literature, the role of boss or director is used interchangeably. Yukl (2006) uses the terms leader, supervisor and boss interchangeably to show humans who are in positions in which they are expected to perform the role of leadership. Rule in this example is used loosely to incorporate control as well.
In disposal to transmit this subject adequately, we gun at some definitions of guidance and management. Maxwell (2005) in his manual The 360 Measure Leader if one of the most simplest and profound explanations of the distinction between a boss and a leader. He stated that managers donkeywork with processes and leaders commission with people. Kotter (2003) goes further; he states that managing complexity involves planning, budgeting, organizing, staffing, controlling and crunch solving, whereas management involves setting direction, aligning people, motivating and inspiring. Kotter describes direction and polity as two distinctly at variance complimentary systems of actions, everyone having their own characteristics and functions. Both are elementary for the changing and entangled pursuit environment.
Based on these definitions one could argue that governance is distinctly contrastive from leadership. Control is exigent to start change, innovate and concoct distinct products, systems and services. Headship further involves motivating mankind to shift alternate agents, risk-takers and innovators. Management, on the other hand, involves ensuring that processes attempt effectively.
The Project Authority Object of Participation (PMBOK ) Guide, third edition compiled by the Project Administration Institute, defines five course groups: Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring and Controlling, and Closing. In all, PMBOK describes 44 processes of Project Government that hardly focuses on the meaningful angle of leadership.
This does not rapacious that Project Managers should not be leaders; on the contrary, to create a first-class Project Manager, one must be a capital leader. The PMBOK is silent on the areas of primary community and focuses and on managing processes; however, the knack to goose others to their maximum hidden is crucial for compelling leadership of projects.
To advantage the expressions Project Management and Project Leadership interchangeably is incorrect, confusing and ofttimes misleads Project Managers into thinking that their roles are apart to engage in the processes of the projects to its completion. In turn, several Project Managers thereupon neglect their yet in a superior way leadership responsibilities, defined by Kotter as setting direction, aligning people, motivating, and inspiring their band members.
A Project Employer can invest in the most expensive, efficient PM toolset ever created to beget the channels gallop smoother. Without leadership skills, company project initiatives and objectives can repeatedly prove to be a futile effort. So quiz yourself, are you a Project Administrator or a Project Leader? Why not be both?
